Rebuild and Renew America: Contact Your Members of Congress Today!

"Everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of our economy calls for action, bold and swift. And we will act, not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth."
President Barack Obama, Jan. 20, 2009

In his inaugural address last Tuesday, President Barack Obama reminded us of the many challenges facing our nation. The global economic crisis ranks at the top of this list, as we in the Oregon design and construction industry know all too well.

These upcoming days and weeks will be critical for our nation as President Obama's economic team and the new Congress work to create and pass a federal economic stimulus package. This is also a critical time for architects, who have a significant role to play in a sustained economic recovery. As AIA Executive Vice President and CEO Chris McEntee writes, "architects have a unique moment in history to reinforce their value and contribution for solving the many issues facing this nation and the world - conservation of resources, safe, livable and healthy communities, all done with excellent design and beauty."

We encourage you to lend your voice and your expertise as we call on Washington to help us rebuild and renew our economy and communities.

1) Write to Your Members of Congress Today!

We are asking all AIA, Associate AIA and Allied members to write letters to their congresspersons urging support for AIA's Rebuild and Renew plan. A delegation of AIA members from across the state will be at Capitol Hill in Washington DC next Thursday, February 5 to hand deliver these letters of support. You will find a sample letter below. You may write your own letter of support or simply sign the sample letter. Please print your support letter on your company letterhead and send to the Center for Architecture by no later than Monday, February 2.

2) Email a Letter of Support to your Members of Congress!

We are also asking that you send your letters of support electronically through National AIA's online Legislative Action Center.
Sending a letter through www.aia.org is very easy:

Click the contact button below to visit AIA's Legislative Action Center.

Log in with your AIA number and password
Select "Take Action"

The Legislative Action Center will already have your congresspersons selected to receive your message. You may choose to send a form letter, or you can write a personalized message.

To learn more about the AIA's Rebuild and Renew plan, visit http://www.aia.org/rebuildandrenew

Please encourage your colleagues and friends to contact their federal legislators as well. Now is the time for us to remind our elected officials that our economy is dependent on the work of the design and construction industry, which accounts for nearly one in 10 dollars of our national GCP. Together we can rebuild and renew the American economy.

AIA Portland Launches Architemporaries Resource at the CFA

Architemporaries
Short term employment opportunities, hosted by the AIA Portland Center for Architecture

AIA Portland is offering a new service to augment our existing online job and resume boards. Our goal with Architemporaries is to help firms looking for temporary help to connect with job seekers who are interested in pursuing temporary work in the design profession.

Job seekers who wish to participate in this service may bring their resume to the CFA and will be asked to fill out a brief questionaire that lists level of experience, CAD proficiency, availability, etc. Firms who are looking for temporary help will fill out a similar worksheet. The information will be gathered in binders that can be accessed in our office resource area. This resource is free to all job seekers and member firms. There is a $50 fee for non-member firms to post temporary job opportunities.

Please contact the AIA staff with any questions about this new resource.

Wednesday, February 4
8:30 am, 604 NE Webster
Portland Habitat for Humanity, with the help of Walsh Construction and Cascadia Green Building Council, is building Oregon's first LEED Certified Habitat for Humanity Homes, and they can use your help on Wednesday, February 4th. Habitat is looking for ten volunteers to spend the day painting interior walls (and possibly some exterior paint, weather permitting). Volunteers are needed to check in at the job site (604 NE Webster) at 8:30 am.

Please contact the AIA office by Monday, February 2nd if you are interested in volunteering.
Help bring the Habitat Home into the 21st Century
Making a sustainable house doesn't just mean going green - it means creating homes with lasting value that contribute to the productive growth and health of the communities in which we live. It is Portland Habitat for Humanity's hope that the 6th and Webster homes can become a prototype for Habitat - a model of how socially and environmentally responsible decision-making can ultimately provide more progressive and energy efficient homes for families in need.

February AIA Gallery Exhibit
Robert Harvey Oshatz Architect
The First 35 Years, A Retrospective
First Thursday Opening, February 5th, 5:30 pm
AIA Center for Architecture
Join us at the Center for Architecture on First Thursday, February 5th, from 5:30 to 8pm for the opening of Robert Harvey Oshatz Architect, The First 35 Years.

Over a career spanning 35 years, Robert Oshatz, a resident of Oregon, has amassed a diverse portfolio of intriguing architectural works which have appeared in publications throughout the world. His works are a testament to an architecture that is drawn from its site and is at peace with nature. As society becomes increasingly environmentally conscious, the lessons learned from Oshatz' work provide a road map to how architecture can be environmentally sensitive; not only in a physical and scientific sense, but also artistically and spiritually. The retrospective will include a photographic catalogue of Oshatz' built works from Oregon to Hokkaido, as well as a collection of models depicting both built and unbuilt projects. This showing follows a very successful exhibition of Oshatz' work in Eugene, Oregon.

Robert Oshatz began his architectural career in Los Angeles at the age of 15; drafting in a small architectural firm 30 hours a week while also attending high school. After graduating high school in 1963, he entered Arizona State University and received his Architectural degree in 1968. For two summers during this period and continuing after his graduation, Oshatz worked in the studio of Frank Lloyd Wright Jr. Under Wright, he developed a keen understanding of the relationship between building and site; a relationship that was also the driving force behind the works of both Frank Lloyd Wright Jr and senior. He brought this understanding of architecture and site to Oregon when he established his own firm, Robert Harvey Oshatz, Architect in 1971.

Since opening his firm, Oshatz has worked throughout the United States and Japan. He has lectured at hte Smithsonian Institute and numerous American universities, including a period as the Bruce Goff Chair of Creative Architecture at Oklahoma University. His work has been exhibited at venues in the United States, Japan and Europe.

Green building and LEED may be white hot among sustainability enthusiasts, but if we are ever going to capture the vast "middle market" that comprises the majority of new construction and renovation activity in the US - an absolute prerequisite to making a transition to a sustainable future - we have to learn to make a compelling value proposition to mainstream developers, institutions, and building operators. In this three hour interactive seminar, Scott Lewis, founder and CEO of Brightworks, will share some of the strategies found to be most effective for evaluating what approach will work with a particular client.

Scott Lewis has a proven track record of helping a diverse variety of clients make sustainability work for them. Brightworks has over 100 active or completed LEED and other sustainability projects for clients including major universities, global corporations and some of the largest real estate developers and REITs in the country (for a list of Brightworks' projects visit http://www.brightworks.net/projects ).

New Additional Information:
In addition to Scott Lewis presenting, the following experts will be presenting an informal panel discussion on sustainability:

Dennis Wilde, Gerding Edlen Development Company / Gerding Edlen Sustainability Services
Clark Brockman, Principal, SERA Architects
Omid Nabipoor, President, Interface Engineering

Utilizing the AIA "50-to-50 Strategies" document, this presentation illuminates strategies for building ventilation approaches that maintain high indoor environmental quality and low energy use. Workshop attendees are encouraged to review the 50-to-50 Strategies document (http://www.aia.org/fiftytofifty) - particularly #s 5, 11, 28, 30 and 35 - prior to the workshop. You are also encouraged to invite your mechanical engineering colleagues to attend.

Participants will aquire information about natural ventilation design strategies as well as mechanical and mixed mode approaches. Through small group exercises participants will be challenged to employ concepts related to building form, mass, climate, orientation, and radiant heating and cooling principles to address building ventilation strategies. Through interactive dialogue participants will share specific challenges and opportunities in deploying these concepts in their actual design practice. The focus of this workshop effort is to provide both technical content on effective ventilation strategies and address organizational and motivational issues necessary for changing design practices.
